Hosts Germany opened the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals by defeating Group-A rivals Costa Rica in Munich on Friday, 9 June 2006.

Philipp Lahm scored the first goal around six minutes into the tournament with a beautifully-curled effort from the top left corner of the box. But Wanchope then silenced the crowd with an equaliser in the 12th minute by a through ball and the striker fired a low shot past Jens Lehmann to level the scores. Klose then scored their second lead of the match in the 17th minute from close range for Germany.

In 2nd half Klose grabbed his second goal, before Wanchope netted his second of the game. But the goal of the match was still to come when Torsten Frings clinched the win in the 87th with a wicked 30-yard shot.
